The physicians at Shea Ear Clinic have over 100 years of combined experience in otolaryngology (ENT). Dr. John Shea, Jr. developed the stapedectomy in 1956, as well as numerous other techniques and refinements through the 1960's, 1970's, and 1980's, and was an early pioneer of intratympanic perfusion (injecting medication in the middle ear for inner ear disorders like Meniere's disease) in the 1990's. In addition to ear procedures like tympanoplasty (repair of the ear drum), mastoidectomy (removal of infection from the bone behind the ear, stapedectomy (replacement of the stapes bone in the middle ear for otosclerosis), cochlear implantation (placement of a device into the inner ear to stimulate the hearing nerves for deaf patients), and eustachian tuboplasty (surgical occlusion of the eustachian tube for abnormally open conditions) , the surgeons at the Shea Ear Clinic perform many other ENT procedures like ventilation tubes (tubes in the ear drum to provide ventilation and drainage for the middle ear), tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy (removal of tonsils and adenoids), endoscopic sinus surgery (sinus surgery performed with telescopes through the nose), septoplasty (straightening of the midline structure between the sides of the nose), and facial cosmetic surgeries including rhinoplasty (repair or enhancement of the appearance of the nose) and blepharoplasty (removal of excess skin around the eyelids).
