If avoidance and medical therapy are not sufficient to treat your allergies, Shea Clinic Ear Nose & Throat offers immunotherapy as part of their allergy management program. We will need to find out what you are allergic to by performing a skin test.

A skin test involves an injection of a very small amount of the proteins found in potential allergens. If you’re allergic, you’ll likely develop a raised bump (hive) at the test location on your skin. Our experienced staff will administer the skin test and then will measure your response to the specific allergens, the things that trigger an allergic reaction, which will determine what you are allergic to and how severe your allergies are. Once we have this information, we can formulate allergy injections that will be effective and safe for you.

Unfortunately, immunotherapy does not work on every type of allergy. It is true that shots work well for common allergies such as pet dander, pollen, dust, and other pollutants found in the home. Immunotherapy is not as effective for treating food allergies. At Shea Clinic Ear Nose & Throat we offer allergy testing and immunotherapy for the most common environmental allergies.

Immunotherapy is often recommended for severe allergies or allergies not completely relieved by other treatment. This treatment involves a series of injections of increasing concentrations of purified allergen extracts, usually given over a period of a few years, on average 3 to 5. Immunotherapy helps your body become tolerant of the allergens. In time, your symptoms will get better and you may not have symptoms as often or at all.
