K. ASIF AHMED, M.D.
STAFF PHYSICIAN
The passion for otolaryngology was kindled in Dr. Ahmed as a medical student at Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan, from where he graduated in 1997 with honors. He was drawn in by the intricate anatomy of the head and neck, along with the fact that it is one of the few specialties that serves both adults and children. This affinity was further enhanced with the opportunity to spend time with some of the most eminent otolaryngologists in the country as a medical student at UCLA, the University of Texas in Houston, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York.
After graduating from medical school, Dr. Ahmed spent time at the University of Tennessee in Memphis, as both a clinical research fellow in ENT, while completing coursework for a Masters degree in Epidemiology. He completed his residency in Memphis in 2006, during which time he won the resident research award on more than one occasion and was also bestowed the resident travel award by the Southern section of the Triological Society.
Dr. Ahmed then spent 17 years in private practice at the Jackson Clinic in Jackson, TN, where he served as chairman of Otolaryngology and Ophthalmology from 2014 to 2016. His research background has helped lead to several publications and presentations at national conferences, and he is currently a reviewer for submissions to the International Journal of Pediatric Otolaryngology.
While Dr. Asif Ahmed is primarily a general otolaryngologist, his main interest is in diseases of the paranasal sinuses and sinus surgery. He also loves seeing kids, focusing on pediatric surgeries, and draws on their youth to keep his inner child alive.
Outside of the workplace, Dr. Ahmed is an avid follower and participant in multiple sports. He plays squash regularly and continues to participate in local and regional tournaments with some success. He was a late bloomer as a runner, but now he runs the St. Jude Half marathon every year. While he grew up as a baseball fan, his true passion was unearthed when he discovered cricket, which he continues to play and even podcast about. Being in Memphis, Dr. Asif Ahmed has also developed an all consuming passion for NBA basketball with a particular focus on the Memphis Grizzlies, a franchise which he believes epitomizes the grit and character of his hometown.
