A dermatologist from southern California discovered that if the fat is infiltrated with very dilute solutions of a local anesthetic (lidocaine) and a vasoconstrictor (epinephrine) that the procedure may be comfortably done with minimal sedation and virtually no blood loss. Surgeons have also discovered that by using smaller cannulas the previous problem of ridges in the skin can be avoided.
