The nose is divided into two parts. The anterior is the visible, front part which is made of cartilage. The remaining part is composed of sinuses, small air-filled pockets. The four sinus cavities are the maxillary (cheekbone area), frontal (between the eyebrows), ethmoid (between the eyes), and spheroid sinus (between the center of the skull and base of the nose). When one of these pockets is infected, headaches and face pains are common symptoms.
Coughing, runny nose, and sneezing can be side effects of sinuses or allergic rhinitis. This type of rhinitis is like an allergic reaction, it occurs naturally when the immune system is infected by allergens such as pollen, pet dander, or dust. Allergies can be passed down hereditary, or take several years to develop depending on exposure to the allergens. Typically, nothing more serious than the common cold occurs when your body reacts.
Non-allergic rhinitis does not affect the immune system and occurs naturally. It can be caused by things like eating spicy food, drug abuse or hormone fluctuation. Changes in the weather and environmental irritants also sway our noses’ health. A runny, irritated nose or sneezing is typical.
Here are some simple remedies you can follow to try to relieve and prevent symptoms:
- Maintain good hygiene; not just your body, but your living space too. Wash towels, sheets, and clothes regularly
- Have a balanced diet and stay hydrated, drink plenty of water
- Avoiding areas with cigarette smoke or aerosol fumes
- Cleanse the nose with nasal rinses or sprays
- Wear masks covering nose and mouth if at risk of inhaling triggering irritants
Fever, sore throat, loss of voice, or earaches can be related to more serious issues and may need to be healed with antibiotics. If you are suffering from reoccurring symptoms such as these, it may be time to consult a physician. For more information, call the Shea Clinic Ear Nose & Throat at 901-761-9720 for a FREE evaluation.
